Well, who am I?

Ein Porträt von mir

Where shall I begin best? This text has started at the beginning over long time (I suppose stories tend to do so). I explained my background, where I come from, my family and such stuff. However, I found this too boring at some stage. For everyone who is interested in the past, however, the part about friends and family still can be found on a different page (only in German, though, yet - sorry).

The presence is much more interesting anyway, isn't it?

How do I earn my money? On the one hand, I am a peer counsellor in the Centre for Independent Living for disabled people here in Koblenz. In addition, I work as a regional delegate for the European Network on Independent Living (ENIL). This job is about political representation of interests, networking and lobbying at the European level.

And because these two jobs don't suffice me yet.I am also a freelancer in the IT area and offer web and software development After all, I prefer not to have studied computer science without reason. :-)

Well, however work isn't everything in life. In my leisure time I also get bored seldomly, I like to play all possible sorts of games and I like to go to the cinema and to meet people. In addition, I am a total fan of Sweden. Furthermore I love Star Trek. even organized as a fan: in the Khemorex Klinzhai. This is one of the largest European Klingon fan clubs. However, travelling is one of my favourite hobbies. I really enjoy to be away often and get to know new people and new countries. For this, I'm also organized at Couchsurfing. What else can I tell? Of course! Food! I eat good food with pleasure and love to enjoy a tasty meal. I appreciate most to do this together with friends. And I can cook albeit only "theoretically".

Because all this doesn't suffice yet, I am also voluntarily active. Among other things I am politically active in the Green party in Koblenz and work on the board at Pro Familia Koblenz.

But now some words about my disability. Since my birth I have spinal muscular atrophy. Well, more exactly since the sixth month of living.

For me the disability means that I almost can't move at all, because my physical strength is very low. I still can move some parts of my body relatively well, though. For example the fingers of my right hand. And of course everything which isn't a muscle. ;-)

The physical impairement itself is after all not a big problem for me, since I'm used to nothing else. I get the things of the daily life managed well since I employ assistants in the employer model who help me with these things. This gives me a greatest possible degree of freedom and independence.

Personal assistance means compensation of the physical restrictions caused by the impairement. It's about making an independent living possible for me so that I attain the ability to live my life as far as possible as if I weren't physically impaired. (Put simply: substitute my hands and feet)

In addition to my assistants it helps me that I have many dear friends. I think this is anyway the most important thing in life.

Since I cannot write with my hand, I write texts with the computer. I use my speech recognition system: Dragon-Dictate.

For quite curious people, I have prepared a set of questions and answers.

1) Can you speak "normally"?

I acoustically speak relatively normal, just a littly fuzzy but absolutely within reason. In respect of the contents of my jabbering, people are of divided opinion, though.

3) How far can you still move yourself?

I can't move almost all, at least in respect of the muscles. I can still move the fingers of my right hand a little. However it's almost not possible to see the movement (but you can feel it). It's just the same with a muscle at my right thigh. However, the face muscels work quite well. Of course my "paralysis" has consequences in respect of hugs. For that, I need and hope for your help.

3) Do you hang at any medical appliances?

I have a rather protruding control at my electrical wheelchair but this is just in the way and can be removed when required. I think you rather wanted to speak about something like respirators etc. Although I have one, I only need it for sleeping in the night and not during the day. . 4) Do you have to be fed?

Yes. This results directly from item 2. But nevertheless it doesn't keep me from enjoying good food. And it can be very erotic - wanna try it out?
